| Adolescents Are Striving To Do Their Best.... Although adolescence is a challenging time; both physically and psychologically, teens are attempting to navigate the waters as best as they can. They are often accused of being lazy, unmotivated, and rebellious. In reality, they are just like the adults and children around them. They are attempting to define themselves in the world in their own way. Often, all they need is support, structure and room to grow. Parents can assist their teens by providing a psychologically secure container for them to grow in. This means providing some rules which you do not waiver under any circumstances, and some rules which are negotiable. Don't forget that the major touchstone of development here is individuation. Although the social life is an important part of a teen's life, remember parents, that NOTHING replaces the strong bond of parent and child. * I work with adolescents struggling with depression, anxiety, ADHD, and anger management difficulties. |
